The BHGS was created in 1996 to act as a body to further the advancement of wargames at tournament level and to assist tournament organisers wherever possible. Another of our major objectives is to forge friendly and long-lasting international links with wargamers and organisations overseas.
Wargames is the depiction of battles from various periods in history using perfectly detailed and researched, model armies and is fought on a tabletop playing area using realistically modelled terrain. Generally a "Swiss Chess" scoring system is used at tournaments, separating players and producing a balanced draw, until an eventual winner is found.
Our first objective was to re-establish the National Wargames Championships and this has now been achieved and the Nationals now known as BRITCON is the first Convention style tournament which has been held in the UK. In line with our main aims the Nationals is now open to entrants from Overseas. It is also a major trade show complete with demonstration and participation games, and various après wargaming activities.
We also organise and administer the various tournaments at locations throughout Great Britain. Additionally we are available and willing to assist organisers of wargames tournaments where we can.
Our second objective is to continue to foster overseas links with other wargames organisations, and in particular to enable Britain, the home of wargaming, to play a full and leading role in the International Wargames Federation. Each year we send teams overseas to compete against the best international players. We are now leading members of the IWF and hosted the Individual Wargames World Championships in 2000 and 2001.
We compile the UK National Rankings for several periods and publish these here on our web site. We are also researching results from prior years and intend to complete as full a record of these as we are able.
The BHGS is now registered with the Data Protection Agency and we hold details of our members on a computerised database. If you are not already registered as a BHGS member, which is free, we invite you to do so now. A further benefit of membership is discounted entry to our events. We also provide free and / or subsidised entry to our events for under 18's and students (See our event details for specific details)
We offer a format for the discussion of existing and proposed rules systems. In conjunction with other overseas wargaming bodies we publish clarifications and notes for many of the rulesets used at tournaments both at home and overseas. Rules authors are invited to use the BHGS to try out new ideas and tournament rules sets and to use our website to seek comment and reviews.
We are happy to receive comments on any of the above, and ideas for our developing role. We are here to serve the tournament wargaming community as a whole. We are a non-profit organisation and any surpluses made from our activities are for the benefit of tournament wargaming and are ploughed back into wargaming, facilitating and encouraging tournament play where and whenever we can.
