Armati Competition Rules
Competition Rules:  Armati 2nd Edition
Period: Western European Dark Ages: Triumph of Cavalry
Umpire: Mark Fry

Army Lists required by 1st August 2011
1). The rules to be used are "Armati" 2nd Edition developed by Rob Wolsky, assisted by Arty Conliffe; copyright 2003

2). Army scale: Optimal; Figure scale: 15mm; Bonus points: +75 points

3). Army selection is restricted to all armies from the army lists from the A2 booklet that fall into the Western European Dark Age category (see 14. below); plus Approved for Tournament (AFT) lists from the former  Warflute website, that meet the same criteria.

4). The event will count towards the BHGS/SOA ARMATI LEAGUE of GREAT BRITAIN.  No player may use the same army (or variants on that army) for more than two rounds of the League in any one calendar year

5).  The Period Umpire is Mark Fry. 9 Camden Terrace, Clifton Vale, Bristol, BS8 4PU. Please note that correspondence requiring a reply should include a stamped, addressed envelope. All queries on army lists and the competition rules should be addressed to the period umpire. All other queries must be addressed to the organisers

6).   Army lists must be submitted for checking in advance and must be received by the List Checker not later than 1st August 2011. A penalty of 2 victory points per round, for each round of the competition other than the final round may be imposed for late submission of lists. Any incorrect list discovered after a game has commenced (after set up dice have been rolled) must be corrected prior to the next match. Please submit lists via email if possible - thank you

7).   Army lists should clearly indicate your Club or Team name. (NB: Team Names should be submitted upon application to participate in this event). Army lists must specify any increases in Control Ratings on account of buying all Bonus light troops or increases in Breakpoint on account of Key unit purchases using Bonus Points. They must all specify any optional troop upgrades (veteran unit) permitted by the rules. There is no requirement to specify fixed Divisional structures as part of the Army lists

8).   Armies will consist of up to 75 Bonus Points plus the core terrain. Armies must be taken from the lists in the Armati, 2nd Edition rules book or the AFT lists from Warflute with the list restrictions and changes as outlined below

[14.]. Where a player believes/identifies that there is a mistake in the points allocation on a specific list or troop type, this mistake must be notified to the umpire, and agreement sought to use the amendment in advance of a list using that troop type being submitted. All such changes/amendments will be published on the BHGS web-site in advance of the final army list submission date

9).   All figures used must be representative, painted and appropriately based.  Players must fully identify their troops once they are placed on table and deployment screens are removed

10). All players must bring with them a Reserve Division marker, which must be placed next to their Reserve Division at deployment (before deployment screens are lifted). If no marker/counter is provided or a player forgets to put it down at deployment, that player loses the right to allocate a Reserve Division

11). Where Veteran unit status has been bought, this upgrade must be allocated to a specific unit throughout the competition. A player who has purchased a Veteran unit upgrade must also provide a Veteran marker that clearly indicates its status to an opponent

12). Equipment: players must bring along their own terrain pieces, dice, measuring equipment, a deployment screen(ideally), Shield Wall markers (if using a Shield Wall army) and fatigue, disorder & casualty markers. In the event of a dispute both players will use the same set of measuring devices and dice throughout their game

13). Time Keeping and Number of Games: to avoid confusion and maintain the flow of the competition, all games will run a maximum of 2 1/2 hours playing time from the moment deployment screens are lifted. This will be rigidly enforced and both players in a time drawn game will be awarded 16 points regardless of the actual casualties at game end. Five competition games will be played over the weekend: 3 games will be played on Saturday and 2 games on Sunday (with an optional untimed practice game on the Friday evening for those interested). Additional friendly games can also be played between rounds provided they do not interfere with the running & time-keeping of the competition games

14). List Selection, Errata Clarifications: there are a few instances in the lists of obvious inconsistencies or points errata. These minor changes are outlined below and will apply for the purpose of this competition alone:

List Selection: Armies in the following sections in both A2 and Warflute AFT are eligible for use: - Triumph of Cavalry (Western European Dark Ages). The intention being to limit the numbers of horse archers (HC & LC) and remove all Elephants, Kn, MAA, CAT and Camels
Armies from the Biblical, Antiquities, Age of Empires and Age of Chivalry periods are not eligible, unless specified as so in their Notes
Definition of Army Eligibility, plus List / Rule Errata etc:

  • The following armies/nationalities ARE NOT eligible to participate:
  • Byzantines - of any sort (Late Roman armies are acceptable)
  • Arabs (other than Andalusian Arab, Arab Conquest of Spain, Berber Conquest of Spain - clarification upon request)
  • Sassanid Persian, Armenian and Georgian
  • Indian, S.E.Asian, African, Chinese
  • Steppe armies (Mongols, Avars, Turks, Magyar, Asiatic Hordes)
  • Bulgar, Patzinak,
  • A2 Hun, WF Hunnic Black Sea Horde
  • (NB: WF Hunnic Empire is eligible)
  • Early Crusader, Saracens, Fatamid
  • Anglo-Norman, Italio-Norman
  • Koreans & Tibetans
  • Moors (A2 page H) are not eligible to fight in this competition
  • Specific changes to army list for this competition are as follows:
  • All LHI must be deployed a KEY units, regardless of their original designation in the army lists. NB: this does not apply to LI
  • A2 Slav – any LI can be fielded as LHI at the player’s discretion, at no extra cost. Both LI & LHI can be fielded in the same army, but the opposing player must be able to differentiate the two types easily (markers may be the best option)
  • A2 Saxon – Lesser-armed Fyrd have their protection increased to +1 (from +0) at an increase of 1pt per unit. NB: This change can be accommodated within the Core Points cost tolerance
  • A2 Late Saxon – Fyrd have their protection increased to +1 (from +0) at an increase of 1pt per unit but this reduces the Core (Fyrd) down from 5 to 4 units. Huscarls have their protection increased to +2 (from +1) taking their point cost up to (12). This can be accommodated within the Core Points cost tolerance
  • A2 Late Saxon – if a player chooses to field his Huscarls as the DMA option, this option must be used throughout the competition. NB: these DMA can also use Shieldwall tactics
  • A2 Saxon & Late Saxon – both armies add the following to their Bonus List options: 2 – SI  3[1]2 +2 Sling (2pts)
  • A2 African Vandal: this army is eligible as it stands, however a player may choose to replace all the LC (Moors) [k] 2[0]0 +1 Various (7) with an equal number of LC (Alan) [k] 1[0]0 +1 Bow (6). If this option is selected the 2 – SI (Moors) 2[1]1 +2 Bow (2) are changed to be classified as Vandal infantry. NB: This represents the Vandal army in Spain, before it crossed to North Africa
  • A2 Late Roman (Western: 400 – 493 AD) – Foederati (Alan) LC should be 2- LC (Warriors) [k] 1[0]0 +1 Bow (6). These replace the 2 – LC (Warriors) [k] 2[0]0 +1 Javelins (7)
  • A2 Late Roman (Eastern): no Armenians can be used
  • A2 Romano-British: both Bonus WB are move 9”, unit BP:3
  •  A2 Pictish (from the AoE section): this is eligible for use as a Dark Age Pict with the following changes: both M2CH are converted into HC [k] 4[0]0 +1 Spear (10) and both LC are converted to KEY [k]. The Attecotti WB are replaced with Irish, and the Caledonian WBs with Scotti.
  •  A2 Spanish (Feudal) and A2 Andalusian Arab: in both these armies the SI 2[1]1 +2 Xbow (2) are replaced with SI 3[1]2 +2 Sling.

Where a player wishes to use an AFT Warflute list that meets the criteria set out above, they should submit both their list and a copy of the full AFT list it is taken from to the list checker

  • No Camels can be fielded
  • No Xbows (Crossbows are to be fielded)
  • The Rule 6.2.2 Mixed Skirmisher/Light Division: which allows rear rank LI/LHI to wheel to disperse SI in their front rank does not apply for this competition. All movement must occur from the front rank of the division, unless SI evading. This does not prohibit the SI from passing backwards or forwards through the LI/LHI in their mixed Division. However, the SI cannot ‘self-distruct’ by charging troops who will disperse them in the open
  • Rule 6.13 Reserves: where a Reserve Division move will take a Division out of the 12" deployment zone, it may finish this move to its fullest extent but then loses its Reserve Division status
  • For this competition, corner to corner contact for units within a division is permissible and is classified as allowing both flank fire and units to avoid ‘routed into ‘ tests
  • The Umpire reserves the right to amend obvious errors in the army lists upon submission
  • Rules Clarification: 7.8.6 Shield Walls: where both WB and FT are deployed in the same Division and the FT are formed in Shieldwall in a move in which the WB are subject to an Impetuous Charge, the whole Division can only move as far as the FT in Shieldwall can move (2” ) - although the WB can stagger forward as long as they remain in contact and maintain Divisional integrity or split the division subject to normal Split Division rules. WB cannot form shield walls
  • Shield Wall Markers: players using armies that can form shield wall must provide distinctive markers to be placed in front of each unit when it is formed into shield wall. One recommended option is to use brightly painted ‘spare’ shields or counters

In all cases above (unless specified otherwise) there are no changes to the core army points as there was more than adequate core points unspent, to accommodate these corrections
15). Table size is 64" x 40" and each player must supply their own terrain pieces. These must be to an acceptable standard, and umpires will have the discretion to remove unsightly items
16). A time limit will be enforced for all games, in addition to the turn limit specified in the rules. Time will be called after 2 1/2 hours playing time, from the moment deployment screens are lifted (plus an additional 1 - 15 minute maximum at the Umpires discretion). In the event of a draw caused by missile fire, a 'sudden death' rule will operate, whereby the next melee casualty will determine the outcome of the game and both players will deduct 1 BP from their final score to achieve a total of 32 points. Players may always commence games earlier than the stated time by mutual consent
17). Victory points will be determined by the BHGS system
In the case of a draw on time, each player will be awarded 16 points
18). Players must be present and ready to start the match at the appointed time. Where a player has a reasonable excuse for arriving late the match start will be delayed by up to 30 minutes, after which time the effected player will be awarded a bye (see 20 below). No player will be awarded more than one bye for any reason
19). If a player resigns from a game at any stage after the first set up dice have been rolled their opponents will be awarded 32 points in that round.
20). Draws and Timed Out Games:
The rules relating to Cavalry Heavy armies and Low Initiative armies etc, outlined in the Victory Conditions section 13.2 on P.32 & P.33 will apply.
Draws with NO Compulsion to Win:

No number of moves is specified for these games, so it is down to the players to get a result; if not achieved then scores are calculated as per the standard matrix. Player A Score (with the higher original starting points score) = 16 – (own losses) + (opponent losses)Player B Score (with the lower original starting points score) = 32 – (player A score)However the ‘winner’ of a ‘drawn’ game should never be awarded more than 24 points. Therefore the 'loser' can only have a lowest score of 8 points

Draws where there IS Compulsion to Win (Higher Initiative and Cavalry Armies):

Rule 13.2: An army with a higher Initiative than its opponent must win within 15 moves or loose.(Note this is later modified to 20 moves if BP 6 or 7, no requirement to win if BP 8+ or if too much terrain placed)

Games Played to a Conclusion:

If the higher initiative/cavalry player (Player A) wins within the 15/20 move limit, score as normal. If 15/20 moves have been played, and Player A has not won, then the lower initiative/non-cavalry player (Player B) is the winner. Calculate the result using the standard matrix assuming Player A has lost

Games NOT Played to a Conclusion:

If 15/20 moves are not completed then this is where there is an issue. Clearly it is desirable for both players to make an effort and get the game completed, at the competition umpires discretion the ‘blitz’ system may be implemented to ensure the required number of game turns is played. If it is not possible to complete the 15/20 moves then Player B is awarded a ‘winning draw’. Award Player B a score equal to the greater of the greater of the following two calculations: 32 – (own losses from matrix) – (1 point for each move not played) ………but not less than 16[Losing the extra 1 point per turn is a compromise assuming Player A could just win in 15 turns] 16 – (own losses) + (opponent losses)[As an ordinary draw above, Player B could actually be winning!]The ‘winner’ of a ‘drawn’ game should never be awarded more than 24 points; so Player B gets between 16 and 24.Player A score = 32 – (Player B score)

Byes:

The BHGS system requires 32 points as the total score for each game. In the event that a player receives a Bye for whatever reason a score of 22/10 is awarded in favor of that player. (22 is a typical 3rd place score for competitions and so will not unduly favor or penalise any player being awarded it)
21). A modified Swiss Chess system will operate throughout the competition. Where possible players may not play against fellow club/Team players in the first 2 rounds, nor players whom they have played in earlier rounds, nor against any relatives in the first degree of consanguinity. Thus a player cannot be matched against his/her spouse, parent, brother, sister, and/or child.
22).Admission to the tournament is at the sole discretion of the organisers and their decision on all matters is final. An application to enter denotes acceptance of the rules.
