for DBR v 2.0 |
|
In order to give a greater degree of consistency and
certainty to both players and Army List Checkers, the British Historical Games Society
have produced the following set of interpretations which are intended for guidance when
selecting army lists. They will be used by our list Checkers at our future events.
We hope that they will become the basis of an internationally accepted and agreed set of
army list interpretations, and are issued in response to the questions that we have been
asked most frequently. These interpretations
may be updated from time to time.

General Note regarding all Lists / Books
Where ratios are expressed in the form X "Troop
type A" per Y "Troop type B" (where X and Y represent the numbers in the
ratio) a player can choose to field any number of elements of "Troop type B".
"Troop type A" can only be selected in complete multiples of X, and must be so
selected for each complete Y elements of "Troop type B".
Example:
4 Pike per 7 Shot. The player can select to field any number of elements of Shot (within
the constraints of list minima and maxima). Pike can only be fielded in multiples of 4
elements, and numbers will relate to shot in the following manner:
0-6 Shot = no Pike allowed
7-13 Shot = 4 Pike
14-21 Shot = 8 Pike
.etc
It is accepted that a number of other interpretations of how ratios should be
treated are possible, and this interpretation is intended primarily for UK competition
play. It has been chosen to strike a reasonable balance between maximising the viability
of as wide a number of competition armies as possible and maintaining the role of such
ratios in enforcing historical structures in army design.

All allied
contingents drawn from army lists in Book 2 use the specific minima (1/4) & maxima
(1/2 or 1 element, whichever is greater) specified in Book 2. Allies drawn from lists in
other books use the minima (1/4) and maxima (1/3 or 1 element, whichever is greater)
specified in their respective books. |

The standard
rules referred to above for size & composition of allies are disregarded in favour of
specific instructions (eg. "all Naval") appearing in a given list. |

Where a ratio
of troops is given relative to another type in the list, generals elements of the
appropriate type are included for calculating numbers of elements. (specific examples
include Elizabethan English: (Book 1, list 43) where a ratio of Staves to Lancers is
calculated including the General elements. Also see all Polish lists, and Russian
Traditional). |

When
calculating minima in allies, (and ratios as above) all fractional values apply absolutely
ie Wallachians Book 1, list 20: the number of Rich Boyars allowed is
"2-5". When used as an ally this becomes a minimum of 0.5 and a maximum of 1.66.
As it is of course not possible to have fractional elements, in real terms, this means the
minimum number of elements allowed, is 1, and the maximum is also 1. |

LH &
Pancerni requirements remain in force from 1689-1697AD, and are calculated relative to
number of re-equipped Hussars during this period including generals. From 1676 - The option to regrade "light horse" only applies to the "Wallachian or Tartar" LH(F) available after 1652. The "0-2 Lithuanian Tartars" in the main list cannot be re-graded. Note: Although Pancerni numbers are driven by the total number of Ln elements fielded (including Ln generals), any generals fielded as Si are NOT counted towards the total of Pancerni when calculating this ratio. |
