The Society of Ancients

Grand Prix

National Championship 1998

This year the Society of Ancients, in conjunction with the British Historical Games Society, is organising the national championship as a tournament running from the beginning of the year through to the Reigate doubles.

Championship points will be up for grabs at all the major tournaments, with emphasis being placed on the Grand Slam Tournaments, the World Team Championships, Roll Call 1998 and the UK National Wargames Championships '98

Points will be available for the leading places at all listed tournaments with the only restraint being that a player may only count his/her best five doubles scores.

It is a very straightforward and simple system. Scores will be added up to provide a total for each player. The player with the highest score after the final round of the Doubles Masters will be the winner of the Grand Prix National Championship.

There are three categories of tournament:
Grand Slams - Nationals, Worlds, Roll Call worth up to 20 points for first place, 19 for 2nd, 18 for 3rd and so on downwards.

Major Singles - Warfare, National League Finals worth up to 15 points for first place, 14 for 2nd etc.

Doubles - Doubles Masters (Five Rounds), Doubles League (Four Rounds), Burton-on-Trent, Cannock worth up to 10 points per player for first, 9 for 2nd and so on.

Each category of tournament has a maximum points value for the top place. This is available only if there are at least that number of players in the tournament.

Thus, a period at Roll Call with only fourteen players is worth 14 Grand Prix points for first place, 13 for 2nd and so on. Obviously, a period with 30 players is worth the maximum score for first place which is 20 points.

Remember that a player may only count his/her five best scores from doubles tournaments.

Only tournaments listed above, played in 1998 will be counted. The only exception to this is the inclusion of the Cannock Doubles from November 1997.

We want to finish the Grand Prix at a major event i.e. Reigate, and as the Cannock event comes after Reigate, the only way to include it is to carry it forward into the next year.
