THE SOCIETY OF ANCIENTS

DOUBLES MASTERS 2008

15mm DBMM PICK 'N' MIX PAIRS COMPETITION RULES

1.        The rules to be used are DBMM version 1.0 together with FAQ/Clarifications/Errata as published on the DBMM.org.uk website.

2.
Armies may be chosen from DBMM Bk 3 or DBM v.2 army list books 1, 2 and 4 (as modified by the appendices of the DBMM rules).  If new DBMM army list books are published at least 4 weeks before the event, they may also be used (the DBM army list book that they replace will remain eligible).

3.        Teams will comprise two players, but may include 1 or more substitute so long as 1 player remains constant throughout the weekend.

4.        Each team will submit two army lists in accordance with the published army lists for each Venue.  Any army or combination of armies within the criteria specified may be chosen.  Each player will play one of the chosen armies, but these may be swapped between rounds.  The team must record which player will play which army after the draw and need not reveal this to their opponents until the game starts.

5.        The team’s score for each round will be the sum of its players’ 0-25 scores of both games in that round.

6.        Army lists must be submitted allocating all elements including baggage to a command. They must specify the number of ME and the disheartened/broken/shattered levels for each command and for the whole army. The total army size for each list must not exceed 400 AP and the list must indicate the climate, aggression factor, year, geographical region, generals where relevant, classification of general, all stratagems chosen (and the elements to which they apply, if appropriate) and all double based elements. Once an army list has been submitted it may not be changed or altered other than to correct any errors. Players may only correct their errors by making reasonable changes to their list. It is not allowed to completely re-write the list, and the list checkers decision on this is final.

7.        Except as specified in the DBMM army list books, only Romans and Byzantines can have regular baggage.  All others converted from the DBM army list books may have irregular (O) or (I) baggage except that armies that are completely mounted (including mounted infantry) can have irregular (F).   In accordance with the notes on p.1 of DBMM Army List Book 3, allied commands of less than 10 troop elements cannot have more than 1 baggage element.

8.        Stratagems such as Hidden Obstacles or Disguised Troops that are list dependant will only be permitted if specified in the published DBMM army lists or, for armies converted from the DBM army lists, if the conversion is obvious to the list-checker (whose ruling is final).

9.        Army lists must be submitted for checking in advance and must be received by the List Checker not later than two weeks before the event. A penalty of 2 victory points per round, for each round of the competition (at any venue), may be imposed for late submission of lists. Any incorrect list discovered after a game has commenced (after aggression dice have been rolled) must be corrected prior to the next match.

10.     The List Checker is Tim Child, 6 Cotswold Close, Maidenhead, Berkshire SL6 1 XF. E-mail t_and_e.child@tiscali.co.uk.  Tel. 01628 635441. Please note that only incoming calls are possible, and that the list checker can only respond to queries in connection with Army Lists. All other queries must be addressed to the organisers.

11.     Table size is 6' x 4' and players must supply their own terrain pieces. These must be to an acceptable standard, and umpires will have the discretion to remove unsightly items.

12.     Players must be present and ready to start the match at the appointed time. Where a player has a reasonable excuse for arriving late the match start will be delayed by up to 30 minutes. After which time the affected opponent will be awarded a win and 25 points.  If only one player in a team is late/defaults, the other player will play their game as normal.

13.     If a player resigns from a game at any stage after the aggression dice have been rolled the game will be scored as if the resigning player’s army had been broken.

14.     Matches will continue until the end of the current pair of bounds when time is called. Time will be called after 3.5 hours plus a 1 – 15 minute random factor. The same random factor will be used in the DBM and FOG competitions, will be determined by the umpires prior to the start of the round and will not be revealed until the announcement is made. Players may always commence games earlier than the stated time by mutual consent.

15.     The event will be adjudicated by player-umpires.

16. A modified Swiss Chess system will operate throughout the competition.

The draw for the first game at the first venue is RANDOM.

The draw for the first game at all other rounds is based on the Swiss Chess System using the teams current score to-date. Teams that did not play at previous venues will be included randomly at the bottom of this draw.

The draw for games 2-4 at each venue are based upon the teams' scores so far at the current venue only.

No team will ever play the same opponents twice, at venues 1 and 2. At venue 3 teams may play teams that they played earlier in the year, but cannot play the same team twice at that venue.

Teams will not play others from the same club in the first game at any venue, but may do so in games 2-4.

17. There are 5 separate venues and each is a competition in its own right. The overall winners will be determined by considering each teams total of their best three results scored at any of the 5 venues. These will be used to calculate the final championship placings.

18. Each team is allowed to make up to 3 substitutions per year. Named players from teams may combine to form a new team, with its own score or, alternatively, their result may count towards the score of either one of the original teams.

19. Teams may participate at as many or as few venues as they wish.
