2008 BHGS Doubles
Flame Of War Event Rules.
In addition to the Society of Ancients doubles masters the BHGS will be hosting Flames of War doubles events alongside the ancients events planned for this year’s doubles. To keep the more social doubles atmosphere of the events these too will be doubles events.
The rules for entering this year's events are as described below:
1) Each event will be themed and only one period will be played. For the first round this will be Mid War with subsequent venues being either: Mid War, Late War or even Early War depending on player demand.
2) Each team needs to bring with them a fully painted 2000 point army based on any of the V2 published books or official Battlefront PDFs. No special characters are to be used. It is possible that at later venues this may be changed so that each team brings two forces of between 750 and 1250 points totalling no more than 2000 points.
3) Players need to compile only the one list, but remember the list may have to both attack and defend and that there will be two players managing each force. Teams will submit a copy of their intended list to be checked by the period umpire at least one week prior to the event, to allow them time to return any lists that need attention prior to the event.
4) Games will be played on 6’ by 4’ tables.
5) As terrain is an important part of Flames of War games and transporting terrain for many tables is a difficult task. Teams are requested to if possible provide terrain for one table that they will be responsible for setting up at the start of the event. If your team is able to provide terrain please indicate this along with your entry. As you can imagine the variety of terrain could be significant so please bear this in mind when planning your lists.
6) The showing of your list to your opponent before a game is NOT compulsory but any troops with special abilities must be pointed out before hand. If you have to keep troops back in reserve, then you should nominate before rolling, which units you are trying to bring on.
7) The scoring system will be used as devised by FOW guru Paul Scrivens-Smith, and allow 0-32 point system to be used to complement the BHGS system. This is the same scoring system that has been used successfully at previous Britcons.
8) Each game has 32 points allocated between the two players.
Work out who is the winner of the game, this is the player who has fulfilled their mission objectives, or who has broken the enemy force consult the victory points table for the mission.
N.B. Both players score must add up to 32.
Examples:
Uncle Sam plays Tommy Atkins at the end of the game Tommy has won the mission having lost one platoon of his own and having destroyed three platoons from Sams’ force. Because Tommy has won and only lost one platoon it is a 5-2 victory so Tommy gets a basic 24 tournament points plus an extra two bonus points for having killed two more platoons for a total of 26 tournament points. Uncle Sam gets 6 tournament points (32-26=6).
Ivan plays Heinrich and at the end of a hard fought game Ivan has broken Heinrichs’ force, killing two platoons but has lost four of his own platoons. This is worked out as a 4-3 victory for Ivan has he won the game but lost a lot of platoons, Ivan gets a basic 20 tournament points, but looses two points for the difference in platoon losses for a total of 18 points. Heinrich scores 14 tournament points (32-18=14).
9) The combat missions played will be taken from official FOW rule books, enabling all players' equal chance to play them and practice before the event. Missions to be played will be selected randomly from the following list:
Scenarios will be drawn randomly at the start of each round and no scenario will be selected more than twice in any venue.
10) Each game will be allotted 3 hours 30 minutes plus 1-15 minutes random time, this should be more than enough to reach a conclusion and allow plenty of time to socialise. If it is found that there is sufficient time to allow for three shorter rounds on the Saturday then this schedule may be changed for later venues.
11) The rules to be used are Flames of War version 2.0 with clarifications as published in “Lessons from the front” and “More again lessons from the front” on the Flames of War website http://www.flamesofwar.com . The event will be adjudicated by player umpires, two players from different teams will be nominated as umpires at each venue.
12) A modified Swiss Chess system will operate throughout the competition.
13) There are five separate venues and each is a competition in its own right. The overall winners will be determined by considering each team’s total of their best three results scored at any of the five venues. These will be used to calculate the final championship placings.
14) Each team is allowed to make up to 3 substitutions per year. Named players from teams may combine to form a new team, with its own score or, alternatively, their result may count towards the score of either one of the original teams.
15) Teams may participate at as many or as few venues as they wish.
