STOP PRESS
18th January 2012
The BHGS are delighted to announce the dates for this year's Britcon have now been confirmed as Friday 10th – Sunday 12th August 2012. The venue will be the traditional location of the University of Manchester, England.
Since the last Britcon the committee have been working hard to ensure the dates do not conflict with other events happening during the month of August from both a National and International perspective.
The delay in announcing the dates has been due to a major renegotiation of the contract with UMIST, investigations of new venues and discussions with International bodies. A calculated risk was taken in sharing the date with Wargames Illustrated before the final contract was in place with the University.
More information regarding the construct of the event, ticket prices and accommodation options will become clear in the very near future.
The BHGS would like to thank everyone for their patience and apologise to those who have been inconvenienced by the delay.

CHECK IN PROCEDURE FOR ANY ARRIVALS WHICH FALL OUTSIDE OF RECEPTION OPEN HOURS
Please note that Wright Robinson Hall reception times are 8am – 6pm, Monday to Friday.
I have arranged for additional cover during your event at the following times: Saturday 13th from 3pm – 5pm and Sunday 14th from 7.30am – 11.30am.
For any residents checking in out of hours, they will need to approach the main door at Wright Robinson Hall and press the buzzer. This will connect them to a university member of staff who will allow them access to the building, normal check in will follow. This procedure will apply to any resident who arrives after 6pm during the week. I will ensure there is appropriate signage in place.
For those residents checking in to Lambert Hall outside of these hours an alternative procedure is in place. There will be a sign on the door of Wright Robinson instructing residents to go to the reception desk at Fairfield Hall. (Unfortunately there is no reception area in Lambert Hall, so we direct people over to Fairfield Hall instead as it’s located next door.) There will be plenty of directional signage in place.
There will be an instruction note on the door to Fairfield Hall explaining what the residents will need to do next to gain access to the building. A member of staff will be ready to check them in from here.
Check in is from 2pm on the day of arrival, check out is from 9.30am on the day of departure. A charge of £25.00 will apply for any keys which are not returned.
Breakfast will be available in the Mumford Restaurant, located on the 1st floor of Staff House Conference Centre at the following times:
Friday, 7am – 9am
Saturday, 7am – 8am
Sunday, 7am – 9.15am
Britcon Hymn
Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught up in Britcon
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see
I've got a poor list, I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
Roll 'em high, Roll 'em low
Anyway the dice rolls, doesn't really matter to meeeeeeeee,
to meeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Umpire, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Umpire, bounds had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Umpire, ooo ooh oooh ooooh
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters
Too late, my game has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody - I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the troops
Umpire, ooo ooh oooh ooooh - (anyway the dice rolls)
I don't wanna die
I sometimes wish I'd never entered at all
...
I see a little silhouetto of a man
Any players? Any players? Will you do the Khitan-Liao?
Light horse fast and Knight thing - very very frightening me
Galley-lay(O), Galley-lay(O),
Galley-lay(O), Galley-lay(O),
Galley-lay(O), Figures oh
magnifico o o o o o
I've got a poor list, nobody loves me
He's got a poor list, from a poor army
Spare him his life from this monstrosity
Easy come easy go - will you let me win?
Oh Jon Smith - No! - we will not let you win
Let me win!
Oh Jon Smith - No! will not let you win
Let me win!
Oh Jon Smith - No! will not let you win
Let me win
Will not let you win
Let me win (never)
Never let you win
Let me win
Never let me win - ooo
No, no, no, no, no, no, no -
Oh Mama mia, Mama mia, Mama mia let me win
The Britcon boys have a top seed put aside for me
for meeeee
for meeeeeeeeeeeeee
[Cue kick ass guitars ....]
So you think you can roll 6 and spit in my eye
So you think you can quick kill me and leave me to die
Ooh baby - can't do this to me baby
Just gotta get out - just gotta get right outta here
Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
Nothing really matters
Anyone can see
Nothing really matters - nothing really matters to meeeeeeeeeeee
Anyway the dice rolls...

Documentary Film of UK National Wargames Championships at Britcon 2011- Manchester.
M60 TV a prominent video production company is making a documentary film of Britcon and the table top Miniatures War Gaming event to be held in Manchester this August. The film will be released on DVD and iTunes later in 2011. We are grateful to the British Historical Games Society and in particular to JD McNeil who has been principal organiser of this event for the past 15 years.
Jon Chappell, Managing Director of M60TV says “we are indebted to JD for all his help and support in making this happen, we are well aware he is also a Director of Matrix Games and Slitherine who are leading players in the Wargaming video games market, so he knows a thing or two about this topic and we are looking forward to working with him and his team at the event.”
We are now looking for ideas from all of you who have attended in the past or who are coming along this year. We want to know what aspects of miniature gaming you would most like to see featured in the DVD. What drives your passion for these games? E.g. painting armies, tactics, creating terrain, brilliant game play or is it just the camaraderie of like minded individuals. We will also be going behind the scenes at the event, joining you in the bar and we want to interview as many of you as we can, star players, champions in the making, overseas players, the convention team or YOU. Have you got something to say about this fascinating hobby? M60 TV will also be filming examples of good tabletop gaming, interesting situations and top quality terrain and models. In fact anything that catches our eye at the show.
We are also interested in learning about video clips that you may have found on YouTube or other resources that you feel might enhance the quality of the film. With help from you we hope to produce a war gaming video that anyone can watch and enjoy and that explores and explains this fascinating pass time.
In fact M60 TV is offering to take your advice and on how this should be filmed, so the person who puts forward the best filming idea will be given the opportunity to help direct that particular scene at the event in Manchester. This will involve suggesting angles and shots to the cameraman so that we don't miss the details that will make the film a success.
The film will be directed and filmed by cameraman, Jon Chappell, who has been making TV documentaries for 24 years. His experience includes filming the civil war in Chechnya and a number of filming trips to Afghanistan where he was embedded with British forces. Jon has recently become interested in tabletop war gaming and had the idea to make this film after watching some YouTube clips and discussing the possibilities with JD. He says “the detail in the figures, the terrain, tactics and the personalities involved make these games ideal filming material. I can't understand why no one has made a serious documentary about such a photogenic subject before”.
JD says “Jon and I have been planning this for some months now and it truly is an exciting opportunity for us all to become part of this movie and to promote wargames in the best possible light. Who knows there may be some agents out there looking for new star material for their next Hollywood Blockbuster, I am sure there are opening s for even the more rotund stars”
Filming will start on Thursday 11 August and continue till Sunday night. Clips from the film will be available to view on a special Facebook page and at the show where you will be able to pre-order the DVD at a special event price.
You can contact M60 TV www.m60tv.co.uk at; info@cameraskills.tv with ideas and links for the video or for any other information JD McNeil at; jdm@slitherine.co.uk
