BHGS National Ranking Formula
&
The Society of Ancients Championships Formula
Please note that information and an explanation of how the Rankings and the
"New" Society of Ancients Championships are to be calculated from the start of
the '98 Campaign year will appear soon
We have left details of the previous system on the page for those of you who wish to refer
back, to the old formula.
PRE 1998 FORMULA
- The rankings are calculated on the previous 12 months of competition results, so in
April of this year ALL scores since the corresponding time last year will be included.
- Tournaments are graded according to the average ranking of the players taking part, so a
tournament with ten Top 20 ranked players will score more than a tournament with the same
number of players ranked outside the Top 20.
- Points are scored for your final placing in a tournament, not who you play.
- To get your best score you should aim to play in at least 5 tournaments in each year and
tournaments such as Roll Call, the Worlds and The Nationals score most heavily. Playing in
more than 5 tournaments helps your score only marginally.
- Bonus Points are awarded to players who get into the top 2 or 3.
- Doubles competitions score at only 75% of the rate of single tournaments.
- Don't worry if your Ranking goes down even though you did well in the last tournament;
others around you may have done better, and bear in mind that your performance in the same
tournament last year may dictate how much your score will change. Additionally, note that
if you did badly in a recent competition this could be the reason for your plummeting
position.
- The nearest system to the one used by the BHGS is the tennis ranking model.
